OAU students boo Jonathan, Fayose at Yoruba summit

Students of the Obafemi Awolowo University,Ile Ife,yesterday booed
President Goodluck Jonathan and his entourage during a visit to
the campus to meet with Yoruba leaders ahead of next year’s
elections.
The placard-carrying students protested the Jonathan
Administration’s handling of education in the country and called
for an immediate end to what they called the rot in the sector.
They were particularly incensed by the security measures put in
place for the President’s visit which restricted vehicular movement
in and out of the campus.
In effect shuttle buses which most students ride between the
main gate and the campus were unable to operate and the  students
were thus forced to walk long distances ,some to their exam halls.
Some of the protesters’ placards read:“We Condemn Jos Killing of
Students”; “Students Are Not Chicken”; “Don’t Sell Education As You
Sold Electricity”; “We Demand Total Reversal of 2014 Hiked School
Fees”; and  “We are Not Responsible For Jonathan’s Ineptitude”.
The students also blocked the road leading to the school’s sports
centre where a Nigerian Air Force NAF-280 was waiting to carry the
President from the campus.
They asked him to address them before leaving.
The students also booed Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State who
sought to pacify them.
The governor had alighted from his car and walked up to the
students with a view to addressing them.
What he got from the students was a snub and shouts of
unprintable expletives.
His security details reading the unfolding drama quickly shoved
him  into his car and drove him away from the scene.
Some traditional rulers also beat a retreat to save themselves from
embarrassment by the students.
Hundreds of PDP supporters, who had swooped on the OAU
campus with different banners to welcome President Jonathan wore
long faces.
Addressing the Yoruba Unity Summit earlier at the Oduduwa Hall of
the institution,President Jonathan pledged that he would take
proper care of the Yoruba if re-elected in 2015.
He described the South West as a key part of Nigeria which his
administration must work with.
He also promised that the recommendations of the recently
conducted National Conference would be implemented.
He said: “the contribution of the Yoruba people to nation building is
so enormous to be ignored. So, all parts of the country must work
together in love, unity and understanding to overcome all the
challenges facing us.”
Appreciating the elders and the traditional rulers in the Southwest
for their support for his government since inception, President
Jonathan promised equal treatment for all geopolitical zones in the
country.
Delivering a paper entitled “Unity of Yoruba Nation,” former
Transport Minister , Chief Ebenezer Babatope, said that the political
progress made by the President, with  his ascension to the number
one position in the country was not a mistake.
He assured Jonathan of the support of the Yoruba in 2015, saying
the South West would not want to be deprived its position.
In their goodwill messages, the Orangun of Oke-Ila,Oba Adedokun
Abolarin, Chief Olu Falae, Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, Mrs.
Mulikat Akande Adeola and Senator Femi Okunrounmu advised Mr.
President not to be distracted by comments and actions of some
people against his administration.
In attendance at the summit were the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade
Sijuwade, Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, Oba Adekunle Aromolaran,
academics, captains of industries, and chieftains of the Peoples
Democratic Party among others.

Lagos State University, LASU VC appeals to students and staff not to
disrupt academic activities, so that the set objectives of the
administration can be achieved.
Prof Obafunwa
The Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, Prof.
John Obafunwa, on Wednesday urged students and staff of the
institution to shun activities that could disrupt the school’s academic
calendar.
Obafunwa made the plea while presenting the scorecard of his 1095
days in office.
The vice chancellor said that any interruption in the academic
calendar would affect the set goals of his administration to
reposition the university.
“I appeal to the students not to do anything that will disrupt the
institution’s academic calendar, so that the set objectives of the
administration can be achieved,” he said.
Obafunwa said his administration was determined to pursue, without
distraction, a strong mission to re-package the university’s academic
programmes to fulfill the contemporary academic needs and
challenges of the 21st century.
“The university, in the last three years, has undergone tremendous
transformation in terms of academic and non-academic activities.
“As an institution, we have recorded some ground breaking and
monumental feats in the course of translating our challenges into
opportunities,” he said.
Obafunwa said that the event on his scorecard of 1095 days in office
was not about him as an individual, but “of a collection of members
of the university’’.
“All thanks to the state government, governing council, senate,
deans of faculties, head of departments, staff, students and critics
for their collective contributions toward the recorded development.
“I say thanks to the critics because their criticism prompted more
things to be done,” he said.
Obafunwa said that the institution was waxing stronger in spite of
the challenges it faced from various unions.
“I am not trying to give an impression that everything is smooth, as
there are issues here and there, but we can always get them sorted
out.
“Whatever we do, let us think of life after LASU and be mindful of the
image we portray the university with outside the gate,” he said.
Obafunwa listed his achievements to include the completion of
projects like School of Transport, LASU Radio Station, LASU
International School, LASU new auditorium and Central language
library.
Others, according to him, are the Taslim Elias Library and the 3-in-1
Auditorium (Faculty of Education).
Obafunwa also said that his administration introduced the electronic
voting system for the students union, which cost the institution
about a million naira.
“The administration ensured mobilisation of successful graduates for
NYSC as and when due, and conducted convocation in the three
years of reign
.
“Sixty-one out of the 62 programmes being run in the university have
been duly accredited by the National University Commission.
“An appreciable number of students have benefited from various
scholarship and bursary award from private and public organisation
and government parastatals,” he said.

FG Set To Review JAMB Admission Policy

The Federal Government on Tuesday, said admissions into tertiary institutions conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board may need to be reviewed, in order to adequately cater for colleges of education and other tertiary institutions.

Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, made this know to newsmen in Katsina State, said the process of admission into tertiary institution need to be re-examine retrospectively in order to correct possible errors.

The minister was responding to an earlier remark by the Provost of the Federal College of Education, Katsina, Professor M.A. Wasagu, that there had been decline in population of students at the colleges, owing to the United Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted by JAMB.

Wasagu had noted that only the dregs of candidates who sit for UTME annually and fail to gain admission into universities were left for the colleges.

He said: “A major challenge is the decline in students population. With the unified JAMB examination, colleges of education were left with students who could not gain admission into the universities.

“It is hoped that a policy will be developed to guarantee colleges enough students to be admitted,” he said.

The minister, however, said a national summit on education would soon be convened to deliberate on issues affecting the education sector, in order to come up with a realistic roadmap to move the sector forward.

Shekarau, who was on an impact assessment tour of federal tertiary institutions in the state, commissioned some completed Tertiary Education Trust (TETfund) projects in the college, including 150-capacity lecture hall, School of Secondary Education Sciences and School of Primary Education and Early Childhood Care Education, among others.

He said the commissioning of the projects was in line with the determination of the Federal Government to increase access to tertiary education, while at the same time would improve on the quality of education.

He urged teachers in the country to see their assignment as critical to national development, saying education remained the only vehicle through which any nation could be developed.

He also said the Federal Government would do all it could to attract more young Nigerians into teaching profession.

How UNILAG 300 Level Female Student Was Rape By Actress Stephanie Okereke’s Cousin

A 300 level student of Computer Science, Arionla, of the University of Lagos, Akoka Yaba was brutally rape by the cousin of Nigeria actress Stephanie Okereke.

Prince Daniel Okereke

The suspect, Prince Daniel Okereke, 37, was alleged to have lured her into his home at Mende, Maryland, Lagos, subdued her with the aid of his security guard before he pounced on her and raped her severally.

Narrating her ordeal to the police, the student who had marks of strings on her back, hands and legs , narrated how she narrowly escaped being murdered by Okereke, in her bid to free herself from his grips.

According to her: “ When he came visiting, I never knew he had something sinister in his mind until we got to his place.

At the eatery, he ordered that the food be made take-away and asked me to go eat it in his place and at the same time rest before taking me back to the hostel.

Immediately we entered the room, he secured the door and I had supper and later asked to be taken back . But he said he must sleep with me. I tried to appeal to him to consider my state of health and take me back to campus.

“I told him that I was not interested in having se% with him, he called two of his security guards to help him to tie me up and seal my mouth. He then brought out his belt and started flogging me,”.

Our correspondent gathered that after the several rape sessions which lasted for more than 30 minutes, Prince Daniel ordered Arionla to pick her bags and get out of the house. Abused and bitter, Arionla was said to have started destroying the property in his house and also flinging same out of the compound. In the process, the car that belonged to one of the neighbours was destroyed.

Not aware of what could have led to the fracas, the angry neighbour alerted the police attached to Area F, Ikeja who arrested Arionla and accused her of assault. On listening to both sides and overwhelming bruises on Arionla’s body, a case of attempted rape was established and Prince Daniel was arrested and later released on bail while Arinola was rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja for examination and treatment.

Our correspondent further gathered that when Arinola and her family discovered that the case was as good as closed by the police attached to Area F Command, Ikeja, she reported the matter to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti that ordered his re-arrest, having sighted the original copy of the lab test which proved that she was forcefully defiled and the cause of the wound on her body.

Still recovering from the scars that had disfigured her beautiful body, Arinola, 6ft tall, and who can be best described as a model, claimed that she saw Prince Daniel as a harmless elder brother who cared about her ailing health.

According to Arinola, 22, and a student of University of Lagos, Akoka, she met Prince Daniel through an online dating site, early last month. “We became friends online and I gave him my number. He kept calling requesting to see me in school and I kept giving him one excuse or the other. He actually said that he wanted me to be his friend and I declined that I am a student and should be allowed to face my studies.

“On November 6, 2014, he called me that he was in my school compound. I was sick and told him that I was about to head to the pharmacy to get drugs. He volunteered to drive me to the pharmacy. I was impressed and grateful for such a kind gesture. After buying the drugs, we drove to the fast food and bought food. He asked me to join him to a seat out joint where I can relax and eat the food. I was surprised when he drove straight to his house at Mende, Maryland.”

He said that I will be the one to the bear the shame since the world will ask what I was doing in his house when I was supposed to be in school,” Arinola narrated.

“When it dawned on her that the prince is a beast in sheep’s clothing, Arionla stopped struggling and parted her legs for the Prince. “He raped me severally till he was satisfied. He later removed the ropes and ordered me to get out of his house. I was in pains and knew that since the law will finally release him because of his status, I needed to destroy anything within reach. It was the neighbours whose car was destroyed that alerted the police at Area F, Ikeja.

“I wrote my statement and went to the hospital for examination. I was not surprised when I was told that he was granted bail the same day. My family had to report the matter to Panti and he was re-arrested.”

Still dressed in his royal white dress as at press time, Prince Daniel, a businessman, who is also related to Nigerian actress, Stephanie Okereke, blamed the devil for the act. “I am so ashamed of myself. We are family of professionals whom you know very well. I don’t know what got into my head. I am sorry and plead for forgiveness,” Daniel, who said he was single and still searching, pleaded.

When asked why she destroyed the property in his house, Prince Daniel said: “She thought I was going to force her to have sex with me. She started destroying everything which is so expensive,” he said specifically referring to his Chandelier lighting hanging in his living room.

When further asked if he eventually slept with her, Prince Daniel said: “Yes, I did. I am very sorry, I need a way out.”

Confirming the story as at press time , Police Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Nwosu said that the suspect would be charged to court for rape and assault.

According to him, the autopsy report got from Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, showed that there was actual penetration in the course of the squabble. “He will be arraigned along side with one of the security men who assisted the suspected to subdue Tope. Meanwhile, the police is still on the trail of one of the security guards who also participated in assisting the man to tie her up.”

Fresh crisis hits LASU; VC withdraws Ph.D certificates of 14 lecturers

image

Fresh crisis is currently brewing at the Lagos State University,
LASU, with the Vice Chancellor of the school, Prof. John
Obafunwa withdrawing the Ph.D certificates of 14 lecturers
opposed to his administration in the troubled institution.
The lecturers have also passed a vote of no confidence on the
VC, calling for his removal from office for the school to move
forward.
Speaking after the meeting of the Lagos Zone of the Academic
Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, held at the Ojo Campus of
LASU on Wednesday, the lecturers alleged that the authorities
of LASU are calling for the withdrawal of the certificates of 14
lecturers with Ph.D bagged in the school and duly signed by
the VC.
According to Dr. Sola Nasir, Coordinator of ASUU, Lagos Zone,
the school management decided to withdraw the Ph.D
certificates of the lecturers for calling for the reversal of
students fees to the old rate of N25,000.
He said this was the plan put in place by the VC to victimise
the lecturers for standing up against the management of the
ailing institution for demanding for a just right.
The LASU Chairman of ASUU, Dr. Idris Adekunle said he was
among the 14 lecturers whose certificates were withdrawn,
saying that this was one way to victimise the lecturers who
stood for justice in the school.
“Now they claim that it should have been Ph.D Business
Administration not Ph.D Business Administration (Marketing).
They said that I should return the certificate. The management
is asking me to return my certificate without stating the time
for the certificate re-issuance.
“They claim that they intended to look into some matters.
They claimed that there was an error on the certificate. But the
certificate was signed by the current Vice Chancellor,
Professor John Obafunwa. Rather than apologise to me and
others for the error, they demanded for my Ph.D certificate,”
he said.
He added that “the management claimed that they intended to
investigate and without concluding their investigation, they
withdrew someone’s certificate. For instance, Professor Tunde
Fatunde was interdicted by the institution’s management for
being rude to a registrar.”
According to Adekunle, “ASUU-LASU has passed a vote of no
confidence on the VC. We are calling for a visitation panel.
After exhaustive deliberations on various abuses of due
process and acts of impunity on the part of the university
administration, we have passed a vote of no confidence on the
VC of LASU, Prof. John Obafunwa. The union is also calling for
a visitation panel to be sent by the visitor.”
But LASU VC, Obafunwa, rejected all allegations against him by
the lecturers, saying they were only trying to cast aspersion on
his integrity and engage in cheap blackmail.
According to him, the lecturers had contributed immensely to
the rot in LASU, as he was prepared to purge the school and
position it in the right direction.
He added that the certificates claimed to have been withdrawn
by the university were actually issued in error, and that the
matter could not be swept under the carpet as being
advocated by ASUU of LASU.

Stop LASU VC’s excesses now, ASUU tells Fashola

image

Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has urged the Lagos State
Governor, Babatunde Fashola, to check what it described as “the
culture of impunity” currently reigning at the Lagos State University,
Ojo.
This came as the union accused the LASU Vice-Chancellor, Prof.
John Obafunwa, of “highhandedness and instituting a culture of
impunity in the university”.
The Lagos ASUU Zonal Coordinator, Dr. Sola Nasir, who addressed
journalists in Lagos on Wednesday, said the situation was impacting
negatively on the ivory tower.
He said, “The Lagos State University is again sitting on a keg of gun
powder that is only waiting for time to explode. The university
administration is encouraging a culture of anarchy and
disorderliness in LASU through obnoxious policies and rape of rules.
We doubt if the vice chancellor is aware that Lagos State needs and
desires peace mostly at this time.”
Nasir added that Obafunwa engaged in arbitrary promotions just as
he encouraged actions that could throw the university into turmoil.
Obafunwa’s other “sins”, Nasir said, included promoting lopsided
composition of the university Senate, doctoring of documents/
reports, misguiding the university council, encouraging parallel
Senate, querying heads of departments on spurious allegations and
engaging in intimidation.
The ASUU Zonal leader, for instance, pointed to the case of a
professor of French Language, Tunde Fatunde, who according to
him, has been on half salary for some time on the instruction of the
VC.
Nasir explained, “The VC subverted the university law and placed
Prof. Tunde Fatunde on interdiction without any (proven) criminal
offence which the conditions of service presupposed for the
interdiction of any erring staff. This is an impunity which must not
be condoned in any university.
“The French professor was said to have been ‘rude’ to Mr. Akin
Lewis, the university registrar. Having been duly invited to a Senate
meeting, the VC ordered the armed security agents of the university
to send him out of the Senate building while the Registrar (who is
only a Secretary to the Senate) blocked and pushed the professor
away from the entrance of the Senate Chamber. All entreaties by the
professor to seek redress with the VC failed while the professor
continues to be on half salary. This is LASU today.”
Calling on Fashola to intervene in resolving the problems, Nasir said
the union would not tolerate a situation where its members were
“intimidated and academic best practices thrown overboard.”
Meanwhile, the congress of ASUU-LASU on Wednesday passed a
vote of no confidence on the VC.
The union members, who met to examine the activities of the VC,
also urged the governor to institute a panel to investigate the
allegations preferred against him.
